Hamon Definition
When a person becomes a member of a traditional martial arts dojo or organization, it is said that person “enters through that organization’s gate”.
Loosely translated hamon 破門 means “breaking the gate”.
A Hamon is used to notify all those within the Sensei’s circle of acquaintances that the designated persons or dojo or organization of the hamon have been completely cut free from his or her lineage.
When a Sensei issues a Hamon, the designated persons or dojo or organization are permanently removed from lineage. It is a complete removal, as though they no longer exist.
Hamon means the Sensei is no longer responsible for the individual’s future actions and that the individual should not claim any relationship with their former Sensei.
